The Arms of the Arts vs The Supporter
"The sick sun is isolated, distorted, cut off from relationship, and morbidly subjective, suggestive of self-doubt and self-loathing - a true description of a neurosis. But the person so afflicted also has a healthy side, which may be projected onto the analyst during the course of the work."
My drawing of The Supporter is meant to represent the civilized side of man, that makes him build cities and gather in organizations. Elephants are very loyal and dependent on their group, which is structured as a hierarchy. And the three tiers in the drawing is a symbol of the structure in corporations, churches or government: executive branch, management, and the work force. While this can be a nurturing and secure environment, it can also make people lose sense of themselves, and the drawing emphasizes the absence of nature: the tree is made of bird houses and the moon is replaced by an electric lamp post. But there's also an healthy side here too, symbolized by the bird on the lamp post. It is the spirit that's still alive and may call the elephants on a journey to the next plate.
